WHAT IS THE CHIEF END OF MAN?           TO GLORIFY GOD & ENJOY HIM FOREVER             ~ WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM
Merrymeeting Bay OPC - Orthodox Presbyterian Church

About Us

Begun as a Bible Study in Bath, Maine in 1989, the group moved to Woolwich and began evening services on Easter Sunday, 1991. Morning services were added two years later. Meanwhile, the fellowship was growing and moved to its present location at the Casper Building in Topsham in 1994.

On November 21, 1999, Merrymeeting Bay Orthodox Presbyterian Church became a particular church of the Presbytery of New York and New England, OPC.

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church, a conservative denomination was formed out of the struggle with liberalism in the 1930's. The name, “Orthodox” means “straight teaching” and refers to the acceptance of the Bible, in its entirety, as the Word of God.

Standing in the heritage of the Reformation, we uphold the historic Christian Faith.

The name, “Presbyterian” points to the government of the church by mature elders, subject to the ultimate authority of Christ, reflected in local, regional and national assemblies.

“O magnify the Lord with us, and let us exalt His name together.”
Psalm 34:3

WE ARE A CHURCH COMMITTED TO …

  • the Glory of God.
“… whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV)
  • the Bible as the Word of God.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God my be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16,17 NIV)
  • the Reformed Faith.
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17 NIV)
  • Presbyterian Government.
“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28 NIV)
  • Reformed Worship.
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23,24 NIV)
  • the Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
“Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.” (Acts 5:42 NIV)
